Basic concepts and problem areas of Philosophy; existence, knowledge, philosophy of ethics and education, basic philosophical trend (idealism, realism, naturalism, empiricism, rationalism, pragmatism, existentialism, analytical philosophy) and education; educational philosophy and education trends: Perennialism, essentialism, progressivism, existentialist education, critical/radical education; education views of some philosophers in Islamic world and in the West (Platon, Aristo, Socrates, J. Dewey, Avicenna, Al-Farabi, J.J. Rousseau etc.); human nature; individual differences and education; education in terms of some politic and economic ideologies; influential ideologies in Turkey during modernization process and education; philosophical foundation of Turkish education system.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course, students will:

  1. explain the relationship between key issues of philosophy and problem areas and education.
  2. explain the characteristic features of fundamental philosophical trends and the relationship between these trends and education.
  3. discuss the impact of educational philosophies on education trends.
  4. explain the education views of philosophers in Islamic and Western world.
  5. summarize the relationship between human nature, individual differences and education
  6. evaluate education in terms of politic and economic ideologies.
  7. interpret the reflections of ideologies that became influential during modernization process in Turkey on education.
  8. discuss the philosophical foundations on which Turkish education system is established.
