Catalog Description:
Basic concepts and problem areas of Philosophy; existence, knowledge, philosophy of ethics and education, basic philosophical trend (idealism, realism, naturalism, empiricism, rationalism, pragmatism, existentialism, analytical philosophy) and education; educational philosophy and education trends: Perennialism, essentialism, progressivism, existentialist education, critical/radical education; education views of some philosophers in Islamic world and in the West (Platon, Aristo, Socrates, J. Dewey, Avicenna, Al-Farabi, J.J. Rousseau etc.); human nature; individual differences and education; education in terms of some politic and economic ideologies; influential ideologies in Turkey during modernization process and education; philosophical foundation of Turkish education system.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this course, students will:
- explain the relationship between key issues of philosophy and problem areas and education.
- explain the characteristic features of fundamental philosophical trends and the relationship between these trends and education.
- discuss the impact of educational philosophies on education trends.
- explain the education views of philosophers in Islamic and Western world.
- summarize the relationship between human nature, individual differences and education
- evaluate education in terms of politic and economic ideologies.
- interpret the reflections of ideologies that became influential during modernization process in Turkey on education.
- discuss the philosophical foundations on which Turkish education system is established.
