Dr. Vesife Hatısaru, one of the academics in Faculty of Education Department of Mathematics and Science Education and Fulya Tuğrul, one of the pre-service teachers in Faculty of Education hosted by the TRT Radio 1 Programme called Yaşamı Fark Et on 27 February 2018.
Dr. Hatısaru commented on the questions on the possible reasons behind mathematics anxiety and the possible ways to overcome mathematics anxiety, directed by the programme presenter Kübra Coşkun. Dr. Hatısaru said that one of the key concepts in mathematics learning is considered as “joy.” She underlined, with the help of student need-based and appropriate teaching approaches, it is important for students to feel comfortable in mathematics classrooms and feel joy in learning mathematics. In this case, together with some other factors, students will mostly succeed in mathematics. Dr. Hatısaru shared the experiences and ideas from Maarit Rossi, an experienced mathematics teacher from Finland who is one of the top 10 finalists to Global Teacher Prize in 2016.
Fulya Tuğrul shared her experience in mathematics learning. She contented that her mathematics anxiety started in primary school, until her university education. Her anxiety in mathematics transformed to “success” and “self-confidence” within the scope of her mathematics course in which student-oriented approaches such as group working, peer learning, and peer assessment approaches were implemented. Depend on her mathematics learning experience, Fulya Tuğrul gave some advices to mathematics teachers.
