A research exploring students' image of mathematics and mathematicians, implemented by Dr. Vesife HATISARU, one of the instructors at TED University Faculty of Education Department of Mathematics and Science Education, with about 1600 upper-secondary school students in Ankara-Cankaya appeared on HaberTurk, a popular national newspaper.
Titled as “A Math Puzzle: Why they cannot succeed if they like?” and appeared on the Education page by Pervin Kaplan, the Editor of the Education page, in the interview Dr. Vesife Hatisaru indicates, as also PISA and TIMSS studies have shown, they find that Turkish for instance upper-secondary school students value mathematics and like learning mathematics. However, students positive attitudes towards mathematics could not turn into achievement in mathematics. Some other factors including school and home resources, teacher quality, teaching strategies seem to play a role in this puzzle.
